John Swarbrick |
John Swarbrick comes from a long line of yacht builders. Under his father's management, at one time their company became the largest builder of production yachts in Australia. The company was known for building seaworthy yachts that are easy to sail short handed, which is why so many of their yachts set records for single-handed sailing. The company built the first yacht to be sailed single-handed twice around the world (skipper Jon Sanders) and both the yachts sailed single-handed around the world by the two youngest skippers (David Dicks and Jessie Martin).
John has been designing yachts since the age of 16. He lives and works in Fremantle, Western Australia, but has worked extensively abroad on America's Cup and Whitbread 60 towing tank research at Launceston, Tasmania; MARIN, Holland; Southampton University; Mitsui, Japan and the University of Leige, Belgium.
It is largely from these experiences that he has developed the latest design evolution of the JS9000 concept – the ADMIRALTY 30 OD.
Some major milestones in John's
career are:
1984 - 1987: Principal
designer and Designer of Record for 'Taskforce' America's Cup defense.
Designed Kookaburra I, Kookaburra II and Kookaburra III.
1987: Kookaburra III wins the Louis Vuitton Cup and the right to
defend the America's Cup.
1987: Kookaburra II wins World 12 Meters Fleet Racing Championship,
Sardinia.
1988: Kookaburra III wins World 12 Meters Fleet Racing Championship
and World 12 Meters Match Racing Championship, Sweden.
1991: Consultant for Nippon America's Cup challenge.
1991: Designed Tokio, a Whitbread 60, for Chris Dixon in his Volvo
around the world campaign.
2002-2004: Designed and produced the JS9000, a new and exciting 30’ boat for short-handed racing and day sailing.
2006: Designed the ADMIRALTY 30 OD, evolved from the original JS9000 concept.
